Users also have the ability to work in both traditional color space and grayscale. Using grayscale will make photos brighter and more detailed. Understanding Photoshop’s color spaces will help you get the most out of your image editing.

So when someone says she _Photoshops_ photos, she’s usually referring to using Photoshop to adjust colors, contrast, and other elements in the image, or to sharpen or soften the image.

Understanding Photoshop’s tools

Photoshop comes with a fairly large toolbox of _tools_, ranging from basic editing tools, to blur, to clone, to mask and even liquify tools. Tools are basically drop-down menus that aid in editing an image. You can find numerous tutorials that explain the various tools; for example, head to the photo website SmugMug (www.smugmug.com) to learn how to use Photoshop’s tools.

Photoshop is comprised of several main tools:

Layers: This tool enables you to apply different adjustments to different parts of the image. You edit each new layer by simply moving them to different points on the canvas. In addition, you can merge or delete layers. For a basic primer on layers, review the “Understanding the Layers” sidebar, earlier in this chapter.

Selections: This tool’s goal is to select different layers, sections of layers, or areas of an image so that you can work on these elements separately. You can use the Select tool to easily access different portions of your image and edit them in different ways.

Adjustments: This tool is used for making color adjustments and adjustments to other various elements of a photo. Figure 4-1 displays an example of the Adjustments tool. You can easily use this tool to make color adjustments to any area of a photo.

Adjustment layers: These layers can be added to your image to create specific adjustments. A few notable adjustment layers include Levels, Curves, Smart Sharpen, Vibrance, Shadows/Highlights, and Clarity.

Thinking outside the Photoshop box

Photoshop is a vast, powerful program. You can apply anything you can think of to a photo. While sometimes being able to think outside the box can be productive, it can also be destructive. Try to think like a photographer — do you really want to see a photo in this

Can you use Photoshop Elements to edit web images?

Yes, you can use Photoshop Elements to edit images on the web. You’ll need to download and install the “web” version of Photoshop Elements, instead of the standard desktop version. Once you have installed it, you’ll be able to open Photoshop Elements web images, edit them, and save them for use on a website.

Before you can edit web images, you first need to prepare them.

You’ll need to install a web browser on your computer and your website’s web server. You may need to adjust some website settings so that Photoshop Elements can use images stored on your website.

Standard Photoshop Elements on Windows

Photoshop Elements for Windows requires Windows 10 or later, a supported web browser, and Adobe Creative Cloud for Windows. Photoshop Elements web image editing works only on images hosted on a local computer or on a web server running an open source web server such as Apache or nginx.

Photoshop Elements doesn’t support image editing on web servers running Microsoft IIS and IIS Express. Those servers don’t allow you to edit folders or files. You can only edit files stored in subdirectories.

Do I need a web server to use Photoshop Elements?

Yes. Web browsers such as Microsoft Edge (Internet Explorer’s successor) use a different way to access the Internet than the web servers used by Photoshop Elements. Web browsers either use their own in-memory web server or communicate directly with the internet. The web server offers the same access to your web images as a desktop or laptop web server would.

Adobe Photoshop Elements web image editing works only when you access a Photoshop Elements website on a local computer running a web server and web browser such as Microsoft Edge, Chrome, Firefox or Safari. You also need to have the correct content-type settings set on your web server. You can set content-type properties on the pages served by your web server. You may need to edit them or add or remove settings. If you need help, search for resources on your particular web server’s help page. For example, this documentation explains how to set content-type properties for IIS Express.

You don’t need a web server if you just want to edit website images on your computer, without uploading them to a website. You can simply save a web image to your desktop and edit it in Photoshop Elements.

My Second Year of Blogging

A year has passed since I had my first blog. It’s been a year of constant growth for me in many areas of my life. Thank you so much to all of you who have visited and emailed me to say they’ve read or are reading. It’s still a work in progress with a lot of changes ahead for me, but I’m happy with how far I’ve come with posting new tutorials.

Birthday. I had a wonderful time celebrating my 50th birthday. I did something that I have always wanted to do – a scrapbook party. This was my first time with all my friends from college, so it was so much fun! Unfortunately, I couldn’t stop eating and drinking. That’s my new philosophy for life – don’t overdo it and overindulge because of your 40th birthday. On the contrary, sip it because it’s the reason for celebrating in the first place.

I received two copies of the book Crafting a Scrapbook Album in my birthday package. I was excited to start reading because I’ve been thinking about creating my own book for sometime now. I’m making good progress on it and love my new book. I thought I had the perfect title for it, but my sister and I have been calling it “An A-Z Scrapbook” for some time now.

And lastly, I want to show you some of the things I’ve been working on since my birthday. I started a blog tour for the guest designer in which I participated. Yay! I had a wonderful time visiting other blogs and receiving many comments. I also had lots of help from my sister in typing my guest designer post for her blog, and I also put together some “test” images to be included in my blog tour.

I wish you all a wonderful week, and may the next year bring even more wonderful things.

Q:

Arduino: Is there a way to access the IDE’s serial console from my sketch?

I have a breadboard and would like to be able to run the Arduino IDE’s serial console from my sketch to have an alternative to typing in all my code. Is there a way to do this?
I’ve tried reading the Arduino examples. However, they only seem to allow you to read incoming serial data from the Arduino – not from inside the IDE.
So far, I haven’t found an example showing how to read and display incoming serial data in the IDE.

As @johnjohn81 mentioned in the comments, the Serial.print function is the right way.
However, the IDE also gives you the ability to open a serial monitor and look at what is being printed out via the Serial Monitor feature (Tools > Serial Monitor > Port: ). You can write out to the serial monitor from your sketch as well.

If you’re using an UNO-style board, you can access the serial port by connecting a null-modem cable from the UNO to another serial port.
If you’re using one of the bigger boards (Mega/Mega 2560), or if you’re using an Arduino Nano-style board, you cannot access the serial port from your sketch. You will need to access the serial port using the UNO-style setup, and write/read from it from your sketch.

It sounds like you’re trying to use the UNO serial port as a sort of scratch pad for your project. Serial output is really intended for debug output rather than general use. If you want a real-time console, use a terminal (Macs have a built-in one or you can install one and Mac OS X will open it by default in Terminal.app).
If you want a way to communicate with the IDE, use the Serial.print function. If you need to create your sketch right now, use
